GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) -- A man
indicted for illegal wiretapping was arrested after he showed up at
a police station -- to apply for a job.
George Chandler, 40, faces up to five years if convicted of the
charge. Chandler, a former Granby, Mo., police chief, was charged in
September 1997 with plotting to secretly record a closed-door
meeting of the city's police review board on Sept. 4, 1997.
The board was scheduled to discuss an alleged altercation at a
Granby home involving a different police officer. Former police Lt.
Trevor Keller said during a 1997 preliminary hearing that Chandler
ordered him to plant a recording device in the meeting.
Charges against Keller were later dropped.
Chandler was indicted by a Newton County grand jury in February,
but could not be located.
When Chandler applied for the Garden City job and Kansas
authorities conducted a background check, the warrant was
discovered.
He is fighting extradition to Newton County, sheriff Ron Doerge
said.
